Is male breast enlargement becoming more acceptable in our society? One sign that male breasts are being, at least, tolerated is the number of television shows that have touched on this subject. So far, I have seen the subject come up on Oprah with the man who became pregnant and with transsexual episodes. But the main focus of male breasts and male breast enlargement has been happening in comedy television.
Of course, a lot of it has been making fun of male breasts, but not all. I have seen shows where a character suffered from gynecomastia and eventually has a breast reduction surgery. But I have seen more shows where the male characters suddenly have real female breasts they they want to keep or act as if they do.
On the cartoon Family Guy, Peter routinely acts as if his "man boobs" were real breasts. And he has fantasized about having feminine breasts. On an episode of The American Dad, the two male characters grow breasts through a CIA drug and enjoy having them. Of course, they lose them by the end of the episode.
If you watch Scrubs, Season 7, Episode 5, the opening segment involves several men sporting breasts...

All of this attention on male breast enlargement, most silly, but some very positive, may not seen very socially relevant, but I believe it is. It was in television comedies where homosexuality became acceptable - in new, more open ways. Remember all the uproar over the first couple of lesbian kisses and gay kisses. Now anybody can kiss anybody...
Television, and especially comedy, has a way of opening up society. The subject of male breasts and male breast enlargement is now part of a larger social consciousness. And our opportunity to display our breasts and feminine sides, in a more open way, has increased.

there was also the "manziere" bra for men back on Seinfeld, plus the John Goodman character has very perky man boobs in Speed Racer, and one of the co-directors of that film is tg.
The animal truth is that just like there is a range of breast size on women there is a range of breast size on men. Society has us imagine that the extremes(flat-chested men and breasted women) are the only accepted possibility but the natural truth is continuum.
You are right about 'society's' expectations regarding not just breasts in particular, but gender in general.
For society there are two extremes allowed: very male/macho and very female/girly. It's a binary world out there and nothing in between is acknowledged or tolerated, with the exception of 'tomboy' behavior and dressing by girls.
Breasts on men are strictly anathema and any show of femininity on the part of a male is immediately dealt with severely. Bullies in a schoolyard 'correct' effeminate behavior, mannerisms and dress in young boys. Adults have their own way of dealing with any show of femininity in us adult born males ... and the ostracism is severe!
I have had to endure both kinds of 'discipline' and it still hurts just thinking about it. I'm bracing myself for more of this vicious treatment when my own breasts grow too big to hide ... and I'm not looking forward to it!
frankly, I disagree even with the "gynecomastia" diagnosis. It's like, unless a man is flat-chested, you have a medical problem.
The comment about the schoolyard reminded me of when I was in school, I tended to cross my legs as women do, instead of the number 4 leg crossing format that is "right" for men. I was teased about crossing my legs wrong!
Television does work on the very young in an almost subconscious way - hopefully younger generations will understand the range of male (and female) gender possibilities.
Some real signs of acceptance would be:
- Guys with breasts wearing bras and not needing to hide it. You can typically see a woman's bra (straps, cups, etc.), but she has no reason to hide that: if guys could do the same, you know that male breasts would be considered acceptable.
- Marketing to guys with breasts. How about sports bras in team colors with your team's logo across the front? See, there's a world of marketing opportunities out there if the social stigma didn't exist.
You are right about hiding my bra - I am very careful to make sure I am not being observed when I adjust it in public...
I'll know male breasts have been accepted when I can get Angelina Jolie to autograph my breasts at a movie premier...
I was at the Philly Flower Show this weekend - flowers of the botanical kind weren't the only ones on display... As a guy with a love of boobs, one can't help but feel envy watching all the curvy girls there with breasts of various sizes bouncing and jiggling away with sensations we can only imagine.
I did see one "feman" oddly enough. Not sure if he/she was a "feman" or a transgender, but his face was definitely male, though with long hair, and he had the body structure of a male: larger shoulders, no narrow waist, and no round hips or rear. But he definitely had decent set of breasts, clearly visible under a thin white shirt and contained in a nice, soft-cup bra. Whoever he (or she) was, good job for living life as one sees fit vs. as society demands.
